Vernalization required to induce flowering in rosettes of garlic mustard (<i>Alliaria petiolata</i>)

چکیده

Abstract Garlic mustard [ Alliaria petiolata (M. Bieb.) Cavara &amp; Grande] is an invasive Brassicaceae species native to Europe. As obligate biennials, A. rosettes require a sufficient length of cold during the winter flower following spring. such, mild temperatures could limit species’ potential western and southern distribution in North America. The goal this research was characterize vernalization period required for develop capacity flower. objectives were: (1) confirm whether flower; (2) define base upper that satisfy requirement under field conditions; (3) determine flowering calculate chilling degree days (CDD) accumulated period; (4) common garden, collected from northern ranges its America probability increases as accumulate CDD. This relationship defined by binary logistic (logit) function, with maximum −3 4 C, respectively. regression equation model predicted 68 120 CDD would result 50% 99% flowering, respectively, across all locations. Rosettes five different seed sources varied when grown garden. originating Croatia source flowered after exposure fewer than those Scotland. In America, seeds Arkansas were more likely Ohio or Minnesota. Our results may be used predict

Interaction of Photoperiod & Vernalization in Flowering of Sweet Clover (Melilotus).

Melilotuis albus (alba) Desr. and M. officinalis (L.) Lam. are normally biennials flowering only in the 2nd year of growth. Under natural conditions the seeds germinate in the spring and the plants grow slowly during the first season, reaching a height of 1 to 2 feet. An enlarged storage root with a number of adventitious buds is formed in the fall and lives through the winter. In the second sp...

Vernalization: winter and the timing of flowering in plants.

Plants have evolved many systems to sense their environment and to modify their growth and development accordingly. One example is vernalization, the process by which flowering is promoted as plants sense exposure to the cold temperatures of winter. A requirement for vernalization is an adaptive trait that helps prevent flowering before winter and permits flowering in the favorable conditions o...

DNA methylation, vernalization, and the initiation of flowering.

Late-flowering ecotypes and mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana and the related crucifer Thlaspi arvense flower early after cold treatment (vernalization). Treatment with the DNA demethylating agent 5-azacytidine induced nonvernalized plants to flower significantly earlier than untreated controls. Cytidine at similar concentrations had no effect on time to flower. In contrast, late-flowering mutant...

Can mustard gas induce late onset polyneuropathy?

Abstract Background: Mustard gas, lethal in high doses, affects multiple organs such as skin, eye and respiratory system. We studied the development of late onset mustardinduced polyneuropathy among chemically wounded Iranian veterans. Methods: In this descriptive study, 100 chemically wounded Iranian veterans with severe eye involvement were examined for any signs and symptoms of polyneuropat...

DNA methylation and the promotion of flowering by vernalization.

We have tested the hypothesis that the promotion of flowering by prolonged exposure to low temperatures (vernalization) is mediated by DNA demethylation [Burn, J. E., Bagnall, D. J., Metzger, J. M., Dennis, E. S. & Peacock, W. J. (1993) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 90, 287-291]. Arabidopsis plants that have reduced levels of DNA methylation because of the presence of a methyltransferase (METI) an...
